Arguably the most influential priest in New Zealand’s history, John Curnow was a dynamic voice on behalf of the poor and underprivileged with a brilliant mind and a commitment to match. He was a great teacher, a great mentor, a great orator. His best years came after Vatican II where he challenged the laity to take the Gospel to the world and develop their special vocation. He helped establish the national Justice, Peace and Development Commission, and was its first executive officer. He empowered people in many countries through his passion for justice and teaching workshops on structural analysis.
